Built in 1922 and designed by noted architect Willis Irvin, the former Claxton High School reflects a Classical Revival style. Its construction was part of the Georgia school consolidation era where larger schools replaced smaller ones to improve educational standards. It was also the first brick two-story public building built in the county and financed through local bonds.
This school building is a witness to the turning point for education in Evans County. When a new high school was built in 1939, this building became an elementary and then middle school before closure in 2012. The former Claxton High School remains a substantial landmark in Claxton and Evans County. The Arts and Cultural Authority of Claxton and Evans County will undertake the restoration and preservation of this building to support arts and culture in our community.
The Jack & Muriel Strickland Arts & Cultural Center will boast a restored 1920’s performing arts auditorium. Restoration efforts will include an enlarged stage, updated seating, state-of-the-art sound and lighting, and 267 seats. The auditorium is named for Joyce O. NeSmith, a well-respected and endeared principal who worked in this building for over 30 years.
Restoration and operation will be partnered with the Evans County Charter School System and will be the home of the district’s Fine Arts performances. The space will also be available for rent for community events. The size of the auditorium and ample parking will make the NeSmith Auditorium an attractive option for Evans and surrounding counties.
The Arts & Cultural Center will also provide a home to the Evans County Historical Society, including a museum which will record the history of Evans County as well as educational spaces, meeting spaces, and a special events venue.
The Mission of the Arts & Cultural Authority is to seek ways to improve the community of Claxton & Evans County by fostering an environment in which art and culture flourish for the sharing and benefit of all residents and visitors.
